It is very common for babies, especially in the first few months of life, to experience episodes of nasal congestion. This is largely due to the immaturity of their respiratory system and the fact that, until around six months of age, babies breathe almost exclusively through their nose. Although usually harmless, this condition can interfere with sleep, feeding, and the baby’s overall comfort, often causing anxiety for caregivers.
The most frequent causes of nasal obstruction at this stage are environmental changes, such as dry air or exposure to dust, or mild viral infections that lead to increased mucus production. Even simple factors such as temperature changes or sleeping position can worsen the sensation of congestion. Contrary to what many believe, a blocked nose is not always a sign of illness – it can simply be a physiological response to external stimuli.
There are, however, simple and safe ways to relieve this discomfort. The most effective and widely recommended method is nasal irrigation with saline solution, performed several times a day. This helps to thin the mucus and clear the upper airways. Nasal aspirators may also be used to complement the process, but they should be used gently and without applying too much pressure. It is also important to ensure that the environment is properly humidified, especially during the colder months or in rooms with air conditioning or central heating. A warm bath, for example, can help naturally decongest the baby's nose through steam.
It is essential, however, to avoid non-recommended practices such as the use of topical decongestant medications (which are contraindicated in babies) or homemade remedies without medical guidance. If nasal congestion is accompanied by fever, feeding difficulties, noisy breathing, or excessive sleepiness, a paediatric evaluation should be sought immediately.
Nasal congestion is, in most cases, a temporary and non-serious condition. However, knowing how to recognise warning signs and taking appropriate action can make all the difference. At Grupo HPA Saúde, we are here to support parents through this and other stages of child development, providing clear information and safe guidance to promote the well-being of the little ones.
